This photo tour is aimed at all nature-loving animal and landscape photographers.

We will be staying at different locations in northern Finland, near the Russian border, giving us the unique opportunity to photograph as many different animals as possible and also the chance to photograph the Northern Lights at night.

The travel period was deliberately chosen to coincide with the peak of autumn coloring in Finland.

The Ruska period is a special time of autumn in Finland, particularly in the northern regions of Lapland, characterized by a spectacular change in leaf color. This natural transformation of trees and shrubs takes place in September and October, when temperatures drop and the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, red, and orange. Similar to the "Indian Summer" in North America, this period is a popular natural spectacle for both locals and tourists.

In Lapland, the northernmost part of Finland, vast forests and moorlands dominate, transforming into a golden and reddish-orange carpet. The dominant trees in this region, such as birch, aspen, and dwarf shrubs like bilberry and dwarf birch, are responsible for this dramatic color change. The sight is particularly impressive in the national parks and on the fell plateaus, the gentle mountains of Lapland. The cool, clear weather intensifies the colors, as it is often windless and dry, which helps preserve the vibrant autumn hues for longer.

For the local Sami population and also for the Finnish inhabitants of Lapland, the Ruska period holds special significance. Historically, it marked the last period before the long and harsh winter sets in. During this time, traditional harvesting and gathering activities, such as berry picking and hunting, are completed.

Nowadays, Ruska also attracts many hikers, photographers and nature lovers who visit the national parks.
Overall, the Ruska season in northern Finland is a highlight of autumn, captivating visitors with its beauty, tranquility, and closeness to nature. It is a time of transition, marking the end of summer and the beginning of the long Arctic winter.
